Which Tank is it?

Cartier introduced the Tank in 1917, and the rectangular case has stayed recognisable for more than a century. “Tank” is a family, though, and each branch is valued on its own:
Tank Louis Cartier
A classic Tank with distinctive curved case sides, made in different materials and sizes and with different movements.
Tank Française
A steel (or steel and gold) case with an integrated bracelet, in small, medium and large sizes, quartz or automatic.
Tank Américaine
A longer, curved case that sits on the wrist, in steel or gold.
Tank Must
A line that spans different generations, usually quartz, in small and large sizes. The material, size and reference help us identify which Tank Must you have.
Tank Solo
A modern Tank in different sizes and configurations. The reference, case material and movement identify the version.
Tank Anglaise, Tank MC, Basculante and other variants
Less common, so worth sending a photo and the reference.
Most Tanks have Roman numerals and a railway-style minute track, but the case shape, crown, dial and bracelet vary. If you know the reference on the case back, send it with your photos. Otherwise, start with pictures of the dial, case and crown, and we can usually identify the model.
What decides the offer for a Cartier Tank
Model and size
A small steel Tank Must and a large gold Tank Louis Cartier are valued differently. Tell us the model and its case size, measured as length by width.
Material
Tanks come in steel, gold and two-tone, and some versions use gold plating rather than solid gold. We check the reference, visible hallmarks and case details to establish the material. If you can see a hallmark, include a clear photo, and please don’t rely on colour alone to tell us what the metal is.
Movement
Tanks use quartz, manual-wind or automatic movements, depending on the version. Tell us whether the watch is running and whether the hands and crown work as expected. You don’t need to replace a battery or arrange a service before contacting us.
Dial and crystal
We examine the dial for marks, damage or signs it has been refinished, the hands, and the sapphire crystal. The blue cabochon crown should be intact and original.
Strap or bracelet
On leather-strap Tanks, the original Cartier buckle or deployant clasp matters. On integrated bracelets, we check for stretch, missing links and clasp wear.
Completeness
The original box, papers and any spare links are useful. As Ben notes, Cartier changed its paperwork around 2016. Newer watches come with an international warranty card, while older ones have a warranty certificate. Include whichever you have.

Selling a Cartier Tank without box or papers
Plenty of Tanks have been in a drawer for years and arrive without them. Ben asks whether you have the box and papers because they help us check the watch’s identity and match its details to the documentation, and photos of the papers are enough to start. Without them, we use the available details, including the serial number, as part of our checks. As Ben puts it, “a matching serial number on its own should never be the reason you trust a watch.” We also examine the case, dial and movement.
Our guide explains whether you need the box and papers to sell a watch.
Scratches, polishing and overdue servicing
Daily wear leaves marks on a Tank, which we take into account when valuing it. “If it needs a polish, we’re fine with that,” Ben says. We assess the Tank in its current condition, including whether the movement works and whether the crystal or crown is damaged. A polished case is not a problem in itself, though over-polishing can soften the case’s sharp lines, which is part of this design’s appeal. Don’t polish it before selling.

Cartier Tank questions
Does a Tank Must sell differently from a Tank Française?
Yes. They are different models, with different sizes, materials and movements, so each is valued on its own details.
My Tank has a quartz movement. Does that matter?
It affects the valuation but not whether we buy. Tell us the model and whether it is running.
Is a gold Tank valued differently from a steel one?
We consider the gold content alongside the model, condition and whether the original box and papers are included. Send the reference if you have it, plus clear photos of the watch and any visible hallmarks.
I have a Tank with a replaced strap. Is that a problem?
Not for buying it. If you have the original strap or clasp, include them.
Can I sell a Tank I've inherited and know nothing about?
Yes. Send photos of the dial, case back and crown and we will tell you which Tank it is.
