Which Ballon Bleu do you own?
Cartier launched the Ballon Bleu in 2007. You can spot it by the rounded case, the crown guard that curves over the crown and the blue cabochon set into the crown. Ballon Bleu watches come in several sizes, materials and movement types. Here’s how to narrow down which one you have:
Small Ballon Bleu (around 28mm to 33mm)
Mostly quartz in steel, gold or two-tone, some set with diamonds. Popular as a first Cartier.
Mid-size Ballon Bleu (around 36mm)
Automatic or quartz, in steel or gold.
Larger Ballon Bleu models
Include automatic versions in different materials and dial configurations. Some have a date display. The reference, case size, material and dial identify the exact version.
Gold and diamond-set versions
18ct yellow, rose or white gold, sometimes with a diamond bezel or dial. Valued on metal and stones as well as the watch.
Skeleton and complication versions
Less common, and worth identifying separately.
Start with the reference and case back. If you’re unsure which version you have, send us photos of the dial and case back and we’ll help identify it.
What decides the offer for a Ballon Bleu
Size and movement
We consider the size and movement, along with the material, condition and what’s included with the watch. Tell us whether the watch is running. You don’t need to replace a battery before contacting us.
Material
Steel, steel and gold, and solid 18ct gold sit far apart. On gold versions we need the hallmarks and, where the watch is set with diamonds, to see the stones.
Crown and crown guard
The curved guard and blue cabochon are distinctive Ballon Bleu features. We check for dents, chips, damage or signs of replacement. If the crown or guard has been knocked, or the cabochon is damaged, include a close-up photo when you get in touch.
Dial, hands and crystal
We check the dial for marks, the blued hands, and the sapphire crystal for chips or scratches.
Strap or bracelet
Ballon Bleus come on leather straps, which wear, and on steel and gold bracelets. We look at stretch, links, and whether the strap and clasp are original Cartier.
Completeness
It’s helpful to have the box, papers and any spare links, but you can still sell us the watch without them.

No box, no papers: can you still sell your Ballon Bleu?
Yes. Ben asks about them first because they quickly confirm a watch is what it claims to be, and photos of the papers are enough to start. Cartier changed its paperwork around 2016. Newer watches come with an international warranty card, older ones with a warranty certificate, and either helps. If you have neither, the serial number becomes more important. Cartier’s own portal can recognise registered serial numbers and help with identification. As Ben puts it, “99% foolproof, not 100%”. We also examine the watch itself, because a serial-number record alone does not establish authenticity.
Our guide explains whether you need the box and papers to sell a watch.
Marks on the case, a worn strap or a flat battery
Scratches, a worn strap or a flat battery do not automatically rule out a sale. “If it needs a polish, we’re fine with that,” Ben says. We assess the watch in its current condition, including whether it runs and whether the crown, cabochon and crystal are damaged. Tell us about any known faults when you send the photos. Please don’t have the case polished first. The Ballon Bleu’s smooth, rounded surfaces are easy to over-polish.

Ballon Bleu questions
Does the size of my Ballon Bleu change the offer?
Size is one detail among several, alongside movement, material, condition and completeness. A gold or diamond-set small Ballon Bleu is a different watch from a steel large one, so send us the details and we will assess yours.
Does it matter if mine is quartz?
No. We buy quartz Ballon Bleus as well as automatic versions. Tell us the reference if you have it, or send photos so we can identify your watch.
My crown guard is scratched. Is that serious?
It affects the offer, so photograph it. We buy watches with marks.
I only have the watch. Can I still sell it?
Yes. Box and papers help, but photos and a serial check make a sale straightforward.
Can I sell a Ballon Bleu I've inherited and know nothing about?
Yes. Send photos of the dial, case back and crown and we will identify the size and version.
