Which Chronomat is yours?
Breitling introduced the Chronomat in 1984 as a chronograph for the Italian aerobatic team Frecce Tricolori. The rotating bezel with rider tabs is its best-known feature, though the watch has changed a good deal since. The reference is the easiest way for us to identify your Chronomat:
Chronomat B01 42 and 44 (current generation)
Relaunched with Breitling’s in-house B01 chronograph movement. References typically begin AB01.
Chronomat Automatic
Time-and-date versions without a chronograph, in different sizes and configurations. The reference identifies the exact generation and movement.
Earlier Chronomat chronographs
Evolution and other pre-B01 generations, in different case sizes, movements and materials.
Early Chronomats from the 1980s and 1990s
The first generation, collected in their own right.
Material and special versions
Steel, steel and 18ct gold (two-tone), Blacksteel (a coated steel), GMT and limited editions. These cut across the generations above.
The dial can help us identify the watch. Chronographs have timing subdials and pushers, while time-and-date models have a plainer dial. A GMT has a second time-zone hand. The reference sits on the case back and on the papers. If you can’t read it, photograph the dial, the case back and the bracelet clasp and we will work it out.
What moves the offer on a Chronomat
Generation and movement
We use the reference to identify the generation and movement. We then assess the case size, originality, condition and completeness before pricing the watch.
Bezel and rider tabs
Rider tabs can show dents, scratches or signs of replacement, so clear photos of the bezel help. We also check that the bezel turns cleanly and look at wear to its scale.
Bracelet
Chronomats are usually sold on the Rouleaux or Pilot bracelet. We check for stretch and slack, the condition of the clasp, and whether the links are original. A bracelet with a lot of stretch or missing links lowers what we can offer; a complete, tight one supports it.
Case, dial and material
We check the case edges, dial, lume and crystal. Steel, steel and gold, and Blacksteel (a coated steel) are valued differently. If the Blacksteel coating has worn through, please show us in your photos.
Completeness
Box, papers and any extra links help. They are not essential.

If you accept the final offer, we pay by Faster Payments bank transfer. The money normally reaches your account within minutes. From your first call to Ben to cash in the bank, a typical sale takes around two days, sometimes longer, depending on how quickly we can meet or the watch reaches us. There is no commission.
No box or papers on your Chronomat?
You can still sell it. Ben asks about box and papers first because they confirm a watch quickly, and he says photos of the papers are enough to start. If you don’t have the papers, we can check the serial number with Breitling to help verify the watch’s identifying details. Breitling also offers owners a Certificate of Authenticity service.
We treat the serial check as one part of the assessment. As Ben puts it, “a matching serial number on its own should never be the reason you trust a watch.” We also examine the reference, dial and case details.
Our guide explains whether you need the box and papers to sell a watch.
Worn bezel, tired bracelet or overdue service
We buy Chronomats with worn bezels, loose bracelets or overdue services. “If it needs a polish, we’re fine with that,” says Ben, and the test is whether the watch is sellable as it is: the bezel and glass in order, the movement running, the chronograph pushers working. Tell us about anything that doesn’t work when you send photos. It saves time at inspection.
Please leave the polishing to whoever buys it. A heavy polish rounds off the case and rider tabs and usually costs you more than it gains.

Chronomat questions
Is a B01 Chronomat worth more than an older one?
The reference, movement, condition and completeness all affect the offer. A newer B01 is not automatically worth more than an older Chronomat, so we assess the individual watch.
Does a two-tone Chronomat sell differently from steel?
Yes. The gold elements affect the value, so let us know if your Chronomat is steel and gold.
My Chronomat has a loose rider tab. Is that a problem?
It affects the offer but not whether we can buy it. Photograph it and tell us what you see.
Will you buy a Chronomat that needs a service?
Yes. You don’t need to service it first.
Can I sell a Chronomat I've inherited and know nothing about?
Yes. Send photos of the dial, bezel and case back and we will identify it.
