Which Navitimer do you have?
The Navitimer has been associated with pilots’ chronographs since the 1950s, but the name covers several generations and configurations. Some have a chronograph and a slide-rule bezel, others are time-only or show a second time zone. We use the reference, case size, movement and dial layout to identify your watch. We most often see these Navitimer versions:
Navitimer B01 Chronograph (43mm and 46mm)
The current chronograph generation, with Breitling’s in-house B01 movement. References typically begin AB01.
Earlier Navitimer and Navitimer 01 chronographs
Older automatic chronographs, including the first 46mm Navitimer 01.
Navitimer Automatic and GMT
Time-only and dual-time versions, with configurations that vary by generation. The reference, dial layout and movement tell them apart from the chronographs.
Navitimer World
Shows the time in several zones around the world.
Navitimer Cosmonaute
A 24-hour dial, a nod to the Navitimer worn in orbit in 1962.
Navitimer 8
A separate line with a simpler case and dial layout.
Ladies’ and smaller Navitimers
Roughly 32mm to 36mm, sometimes with diamonds or a mother-of-pearl dial.
The reference is engraved on the case back on most Navitimers and printed on the papers. If you can’t find it, send photos of the dial, the case back and the bracelet or strap and we will identify the watch for you.
What affects the value of a Navitimer
We start with the reference and configuration, then look at the details below.
Reference and generation
A B01 chronograph, an older automatic chronograph and a time-only Navitimer are different watches in the market. We use the reference to identify the exact version, as the model name alone isn’t enough. A clean vintage Navitimer with its original dial and bezel needs a separate assessment.
Size, material and dial
The 43mm and 46mm sizes appeal to different buyers, and steel is valued differently from steel and gold or 18ct gold. We also consider dial colour, including black, blue, green and silver.
The slide-rule bezel
The bezel carries the printed scales and should turn smoothly. We check it for stiffness, wear to the markings, scratches and signs it has been replaced.
Chronograph and movement
On a chronograph we test start, stop and reset and check the pushers return cleanly. Time-only and GMT versions we check for accurate running and, on a GMT, the second time zone hand. We also look at the crystal, case edges, dial, hands and bracelet. Service history is useful to see, though you do not need to service the watch before selling.
Bracelet and set
An original bracelet, its links and clasp, and any box and papers help us assess the watch’s configuration and completeness. If some are missing, tell us what you have. We assess each Navitimer individually.

How selling your Navitimer works
- 1
Send the details
Use the valuation form, or WhatsApp photos of the dial, case back, bezel and clasp, plus any papers, to Ben.
- 2
Receive an initial estimate
Ben looks at the photos himself and replies, usually within hours.
- 3
Choose how to hand it over
Send it by fully insured Royal Mail Special Delivery, or arrange an appointment with Ben in Manchester or at our Mayfair showroom in London. We don’t take walk-ins.
- 4
Inspection and final offer
We check the watch against its reference, papers and condition, then confirm a final offer and explain any difference from the estimate. If you decide not to sell, we return the watch insured at no cost to you.
- 5
Payment
If you accept the final offer, we pay by Faster Payments bank transfer. The money normally reaches your account within minutes. From your first call to Ben to cash in the bank, a typical sale takes around two days, sometimes longer, depending on how quickly we can meet or the watch reaches us. There is no commission.
No box or papers on your Navitimer
You can still sell it. Ben asks about the box and papers first because they are the quickest way to check the watch’s identity. “A watch should always be matched to its papers. If they don’t line up, we stop there.” Photos of the papers are enough to start, and we match them to the watch when we see it.
Without them, the serial number carries more weight. We can check the serial number with Breitling, and Breitling runs its own Certificate of Authenticity service for owners who want one. A serial number alone doesn’t prove a watch is genuine. “A serial number check is a strong test, not a perfect one. Well-made fakes can copy a real serial number.” We look at the watch itself as well.
Our guide explains whether you need the box and papers to sell a watch.
Scratched, polished or overdue a service
It can still be sold. “If it needs a polish, we’re fine with that.” We check whether the watch can be sold as it is, including whether the bezel turns properly, the glass is in good order, and the chronograph and time work. Tell us about any faults when you send photos, such as a stopped chronograph, a loose pusher or moisture under the crystal, so there are no surprises at inspection.
Please don’t polish the case before selling. Heavy polishing softens the edges and can lower what a buyer will pay.

Questions about selling a Navitimer
My chronograph has stopped working. Will you still buy it?
Usually yes. Tell us what it does and doesn’t do and we will price the watch as it is.
Does a B01 Navitimer sell differently from an older one?
They are different watches with different details, and a well-kept older reference can match a worn newer one. Send the reference and photos and we will say how we see yours.
I've lost the original bracelet and wear it on a strap. Is that a problem?
We can still buy the watch. The strap changes what we assess, so tell us what the watch came with and what it has now.
Can I sell a Navitimer I've inherited and know nothing about?
Yes. Send photos of the dial, the case back and anything that came with it and we will identify it for you.
Is it safe to post a Navitimer?
It travels fully insured by Royal Mail Special Delivery, tracked, and is returned insured if you decide not to sell.
